This project was sponsored by eHow! One of my favorite places to find fun DIY projects!
Have you ever found precious baby moccasins or handmade dolls at a boutique and just WISHED you knew someone with a kiddo so you had an excuse to but it (sometimes I just do...I.E. unicorn doll)? At the beginning of the Summer we found out one of my best friends is expecting and needless to say I'm EAGER to help nest.
Being a crafter, as I browse through baby clothes and nursery decor I'm just thinking, "I can make that...and that...and that," so when I found a few cute baby quilts online I knew this would be the perfect handmade gift for my birthday buddy ( she's due the week of my birthday! eek!)
This project can be completed with just a few yards of printed cotton fabric and batting so materials for the entire quilt totals out under $50. I hand quilted the entire blanket, but you could easily modify this step and use a machine if tedious stitching isn't your thing!

Mitered corners give this blanket a dressier look and are super easy to sew! The border I added to the quilt is a natural linen which adds a nice contrast in texture to the rest of the blanket.
I replicated the simple stitching techniques used on Kantha quilts to hand-quilt the layers together.
It took approximately 6 hours to stitch the entire quilt.
